UNIVERSITY PARK — Izaiah Brockington and Myreon Jones scored 17 points apiece, Jones making three clinching free throws in the waning seconds, and Penn State held off a resurgent Rutgers 75-67 Thursday night for its first Big Ten Conference win this season.
Seth Lundy chipped in 16 points with 10 rebounds and a career-high three steals in his return to the starting lineup. Lundy had all three steals just past the midway point of the first half as Penn State (4-6, 1-5) harassed Rutgers into early turnovers to fuel a 10-0 run.
The Nittany Lions led 34-24 at the break and, when Jones opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a three-point play, were cruising with an 18-point lead by the 10:38 mark.
Rutgers came storming back with an 11-0 run in little more than 2 minutes, slicing the once-comfortable lead to as few as four points down the stretch.
“I’m really proud of this group of guys,” Penn State interim head coach Jim Ferry said. “This is a tough league; we’ve been in battles we haven’t won. We’ve lost a couple down the stretch, including a tough one at Illinois. I think our guys really showed the character that we see every single day. I thought we had unbelievable leadership from Jamari (Wheeler) and John (Harrar).”
Ron Harper Jr. scored 14 of his 18 points for Rutgers after halftime, making 5 of 10, including a pair of 3-pointers as the Scarlet Knights rallied. Myles Johnson scored 14 with seven rebounds for Rutgers (7-6, 3-6), which is in a stretch of five straight losses.
Before Thursday, Rutgers had lost four to Big Ten foes either ranked in the Top 25 or receiving votes.
Brockington hit four of his first five shots as Penn State got off to the hot start. At one point early in the second half the Nittany Lions were shooting 67% from the floor. Penn State finished at 49% (27 of 55). Early in the second half, Penn State was 4 of 7 from behind the 3-point arc but cooled to one of the next five over the last 12 or 13 minutes.
“I thought our guys really looked connected today. We really defended as a team, this was our best defensive game. We were locked in. We played disciplined, we played without fouling and we rebounded the ball…For us to come out and do it and then win, I think it shows the guys are really excited about it and buying in. I thought everyone really stepped up today,” Ferry said.
Rutgers visits Indiana on Sunday while Penn State continues its three-game homestand against Northwestern on Saturday.
Penn State, which paused 17 days last month after positive COVID-19 tests, is nearing the end of a stretch of four games in seven days.

Pirates rebuild mode picks up steam.

PITTSBURGH — Ben Cherington is tearing it all down. All of it. It’s the only way the Pittsburgh Pirates general manager sees a way forward.
The process Cherington began when he took over 15 months ago is picking up speed after the Pirates sent starting pitcher Joe Musgrove to the San Diego Padres as part of a three-team trade that brought five prospects to Pittsburgh.
It’s a process that will likely have little short-term impact at the big-league level for a club that finished the truncated 2020 season with the worst record in the majors. Still, it’s one Cherington is convinced is the surest way to create sustainable success for a franchise that’s fallen on hard times since reaching the playoffs three straight seasons from 2013-15.
The Pirates need young talent. A lot of it. And while Cherington is well aware betting on teenagers and early 20-somethings doesn’t necessarily guarantee anything, the more of them the club has under its umbrella, the better chance some turn into impactful players in the big leagues down the road.
“We’re going to get to a time when our focus shifts, but we have to be really committed to building that talent base first,” Cherington said.
A base that Cherington considers in better shape now than it was when he took over from Neal Huntington in the fall of 2019. While the Pirates have splurged in the international free agent market — including giving 16-year-old outfield prospect Shalin Polanco a $2.35 million signing bonus last week — they’ve frequently relied on the team’s few proven players at the big league level to restock the minor league system.
In the last year, outfielder Starling Marte, first baseman Josh Bell and Musgrove have all been sent elsewhere in exchange for what the Pirates hope are players capable of eventually returning the team to contention in the NL Central.
The haul for Musgrove includes 19-year-old outfielder Hudson Head (a third-round pick in the 2019 first-year player draft whose stock has risen since), pitchers Drake Fellows and Omar Cruz and catcher Endy Rodriguez from the New York Mets. All three are 22 or younger.
“The younger they are, the further away they are,” Cherington said. “That does represent some risk, no doubt. There’s risk, there’s talent, there’s taking a subjective evaluation on the scouting side, there’s performance analysis, there’s character, there’s health. There’s just general upside, relative to that risk. We try to bake all that together into a stew and see where it leads us.”
Even if the path might take a while. Cherington was adamant the decisions to ship Bell and Musgrove were not financially motivated. Musgrove, Pittsburgh’s opening day starter in 2020, earned a pay bump to $4.45 million for 2021 while Bell, an All-Star in 2019, will make $6.35 million this season in Washington after both players signed one-year deals last week.
“There was no need to move payroll for the sake of moving payroll,” Cherington said. “There was no request to do that.”
Still, the departure of Musgrove and Bell means just two players — outfielder Gregory Polanco and second baseman Adam Frazier — will make more than $4 million in 2021. Cherington hinted the Pirates will use some of the money freed up by the trades to bring in a veteran or two before spring training begins next month. Musgrove’s absence creates a hole near the top of the rotation behind Jameson Taillon.
“We’ve got oars in the water so to speak in both free agency and trade,” Cherington said. “We’d like to add. To some extent as you all know, at least the free agency part of the offseason has been slower I’d say. So we’ll see at some point. I expect that will pick up, now that we’re past arbitration, that will pick up.”
Still, the Pirates will enter 2021 very young and largely anonymous save for Taillon, third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes and left fielder Bryan Reynolds. Cherington stressed he and manager Derek Shelton will have to continue to build a positive culture while accepting there may be more downs than ups at the big-league level in the near future.
“To some extent, it’s up to the two of us to help lead us toward that environment I talked about, even if we do have some tougher outcomes in the short-term,” Cherington said. “That would be the simple thing. We have to continue to work toward being great at the things we can control and trust if we do that over time that talent will develop, keep getting better, we’ll be able to add to it at the right times and that will help us win.”

We’re back again for another week of NFL picks, and once again I’m the worst in this entire company at picking the winner of NFL games. In my defense, I tend to be a generous, nice person — and by that I mean I think the Chargers have burned me every single damn week I pick them.
Yes, I’m picking them again this week. I still believe in Justin Herbert and his glorious flowing locks. Also Los Angeles is playing the Jets this week. I think any team in the league could beat the Jets. In fact, I propose a year-round football extravaganza where every team in the league gets to play the Jets once in the offseason, as a reward for enduring 2020. This year has sucked so bad, we all deserve to feel like winners for one week. Well, except fans of the Jets, where this scenario would be a Sisyphean torment. Can’t make everyone happy.
The big game this week that really stumped the experts was Green Bay and Indianapolis. On paper this really shouldn’t be that difficult. The Packers are 7-2, they’re cruising to winning the NFC North with little resistance, but dig a little deeper and there’s cause for concern. This team has had a really soft schedule so far, and still dropped a game to the Vikings and struggled to put away Jacksonville last week. That doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence. The Colts are finding their stride too. Philip Rivers isn’t quite as unflappable as he once was, but this team is finding ways to compete and are now leading the AFC South. It’s going to be a good game either way.
Outside of one week performance the game to watch this week will be Cardinals vs. Seahawks. The NFC West is so brutal that divisional games will decide the winner, and Seattle can’t afford to drop a game to Arizona in the three-way tie that’s taking place. The Seahawks lost to 37-34 in overtime when they last met, and another loss could spell the end to Seattle’s season. It’s not that Russell Wilson and Co. deserve to miss the postseason, far from it — more that there’s a reality that the division is so tight we could easily see a 10-6 or 11-5 team miss the playoffs by virtue of the rest of the division. It’s tragically unfair, especially in a season where nobody in the NFC East seems to want to win a game of football, but these years happen sometimes, and always result in people wanting the playoff format changes as a result.

Lock of the Week.
I usually give you a couple of options here, with one I like to zero in on for the biggest payout. Of course, betting moneyline locks aren’t built for that, so you have to be careful what you’re calling a “lock.”
For instance, take a look at the Los Angeles Chargers and their -415 moneyline over the New York Jets. Here’s why I’m scared of that. Say what you will about Joe Flacco, the guy that will likely start for the Jets the rest of the season as they begin tossing Sam Darnold’s clothes out the door like a girlfriend during a break up, but he was pretty good a couple of weeks ago. In fact, you can use the phrase “pretty good” to describe Flacco’s entire career. He was a decent starting quarterback in the league. What really set him apart, and it was weird, is the playoffs. Postseason Joe Flacco was elite. One of the best of his era.
The man, even as a rookie, was never one-and-done in the playoffs, something that his contemporaries like Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and even Tom Brady can’t claim. His postseason record is 10-5 with a Super Bowl Championship and he made it to the AFC title game three times. He passed for 3,223 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 picks in those contests. Playoffs Flacco was the real deal. Which is kind of what he looked like against the New England Patriots two weeks ago.
Playing against an Anthony Lynn led Chargers team with a rookie QB puts the odds, still long, in Flacco’s favor. And, as we discussed a week ago, a team going 0-16 in the modern NFL is tough. Almost as hard as going 16-0. So it’s not my lock.
For that, we’re going with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who made throw rugs out of the Cincinnati Bengals to get to 10-0 Sunday. They’re seventh in points scored and third in points allowed. The Jacksonville Jaguars, on the other hand, are the Jags. Now, this game could be tighter than the spread, as the Steelers have never met an inferior team they won’t play down to, but a straight up win? Talent alone should get them across the finish line.

Teaser of the Week.
The lines this week are all over the place, with four early spreads over a touchdown and seven at -3.5 or better. I can think of no better time to implement a teaser to simplify this for all of us, especially since this Baltimore Ravens -6 line against the Tennessee Titans seems a tad… hopeful.
The Ravens have a ton of talent, but they also have the most predictable offense in all of football. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, a guy that, we’ll say, has used more nefarious means to glean an opponent’s playbook in the past, used that fact to slog down that predictable offense to get a 23-17 upset Sunday. It’s been a problem for the Ravens since the last postseason. And they show no signs of fixing it.
Now the problem is they’re playing the same team that exposed them like a premium snapchat screenshot in the divisional round last year when the Tennessee Titans beat Baltimore 28-12.
So here’s the beauty of the teaser. If I was picking these games straight up, I’d go Rams and Titans easy. But with the teaser, we can cover all our bases creating a spread that, even if my win prediction is wrong, will still likely pay us some cash thanks to a little 0.60 teaser.
Prop Bet of the Week.
He and Metcalf have the same problem in the NFC West and that’s the Rams’ secondary. Against Los Angeles, shadowed by Jalen Ramsey most of the day, Metcalf caught two passes for 28 yards. Hopkins has yet to face off against the Rams this season, but two games against their rivals are coming up on the schedule. Diggs, on the other hand, is playing in the AFC East and, outside of the Pats’ Stephon Gilmore, who’s been dealing with a knee since coming back from the COVID-19 list, has a significantly easier path to the receiving title with one issue; the weather in Buffalo over the next month.
I still like Hopkins to take it. Even if he has some middling games against the Rams, there’s still the Seahawks, the Gilmore-less Patriots, the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles on the schedule to pile up the yardage, win or lose.

The Crazy, Longshot, Throwing-a-Dart Parlay of the Week.
Are we throwing a dart if we like two upsets already or are we finding a winning lottery ticket on the floor of a gas station men’s room? Either way, there’s a cartoon bag with a big dollar sign waiting on us if we hit this one.
As for the Green Bay Packers, they’re playing at the Indianapolis Colts who were fantastic Sunday, but don’t seem to be able to put two weeks of that together this season. п»ї2021 Fantasy Football Way-Too-Early Mock Draft: Shocking First-Round Pick Might Make Perfect Sense.
The 2020 fantasy football season was a wild ride of injuries, pandemic-related player absences, schedule changes and so much more. How wild was it? The Broncos had to start a practice squad wide receiver at quarterback when their top signal-callers were deemed unavailable due to COVID-19.
Luckily, the NFL and fantasy footballers alike could navigate a full season, and fantasy leaguers crowned a champion. While the NFL has three more games to crown a champion of its own, it's never a bad time to start to look ahead to the 2021 NFL campaign. Assuming we’re back to (somewhat) normal, what can we all expect from fantasy football drafts? Well, the Sports Illustrated fantasy team got together for a mock draft that might reveal some insights.
This mock draft is 10 rounds and based on a 12-team, full PPR format. Each of our fantasy managers was required to draft at least one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, a flex starter (RB/WR/TE), and a tight end. Incoming rookies were eligible, though their value remains in question until they're drafted.
So without further ado, here’s our initial look at the 2021 fantasy campaign!

Notes: Six running backs came off the board to kick it off, with McCaffrey leading the way. While he missed most of the season due to injuries, CMC averaged more than 30 fantasy points in his three games. To the surprise of no one, Adams was the first wideout selected, but Jefferson's being picked as the second receiver opened eyes. The question, though, is should it be a surprise? From Week 3 on, Jefferson was the fourth-highest scoring wide receiver in fantasy football. Elliott dropped down to No. 10, where he could be a steal. Remember, he averaged more than 22 fantasy points a game before Dak Prescott was lost for the year.

Notes: There were no big surprises in this round, although Kelce's NOT being a first-round selection might come as somewhat of a shock. I didn't expect Thomas to go ahead of Metcalf considering the Saints' questions at quarterback, and the fact that Montgomery went as high as he did was notable. I'm not saying he wasn't a true league winner this past season, but I do wonder whether he'll be able to duplicate his high level of production when the schedule is tougher and with Tarik Cohen back. The fact that Robinson, Dobbins and Ekeler lasted until the end of the round proves the depth at running back will be much better in 2021.

Notes: This round had a few potential bargains at running back, with Edwards-Helaire, Gibson, Swift, Mixon and Akers coming off the board. Akers's stock certainly rose due to his late-season rookie success, and I can see him being picked higher in future drafts. Mahomes was the first quarterback off the board, and Waller went as the No. 2 tight end behind Kelce and ahead of George Kittle. The slide that Kittle saw in this draft was surprising. Stay tuned for that.

Notes: Seven of the 12 picks in this round were wide receivers, with Lamb being the most notable as he went ahead of his teammate, Cooper. Lamb was the WR11 and averaged more than 17 fantasy points in games played with Dak Prescott under center, so it's certainly not a reach. The fact that wideouts like Thielen, Johnson, Fuller, Lockett and Cooper were available in the fourth round isn't a shock but more a look into how deep this position will be in 2021 drafts. Allen, this past season's No. 1 quarterback, was the second signal-caller selected.

Notes: This was another heavy round for wideouts, and the names still on the board at this point should be noted. Jones, Woods, Smith-Schuster, Kupp and Golladay were all drafted much higher in 2019, but injuries or inconsistent totals have hurt their appeal. All could be steals in the draft, but all come with risk. Aiyuk going this high could be seen as a surprise, especially since he went ahead of Golladay, Tyler Boyd and other "big-name" players. He did average 18.4 fantasy points in Weeks 7 to 17, ranking fourth among wideouts in that category. Jackson, who was the top quarterback in many 2019 drafts, went third at the position.

Notes: The shocker in this round is that Kittle fell this far down the line and was chosen behind Tonyan. Honestly, I have to chalk this up to either a mistake in the rankings or simply not realizing he was still on the board at the time. Regardless, Kittle is not going to fall this far in most drafts. Herbert, the rookie phenom, went as the fifth quarterback, ahead of Watson, Wilson and Rodgers, who were all selected later in the round. Former superstar Beckham was drafted as a No. 3 wideout for Heisler, and that’s what he is (at best) heading into 2021.

Notes: This is the part of the draft when the rookies started to come flying off the board, led by Chase and Smith. Etienne and Harris followed quickly thereafter, and I'd guess both would be drafted much higher depending on where they might land in the actual NFL draft. For example, Etienne or Harris landing in Atlanta would push them into a potential top-30 selection. Prescott's falling to Round 7 could be a steal, depending on his rehab from a gruesome leg injury, and Claypool could be a great bargain too, if Smith-Schuster leaves the Steelers.


Michael Fabiano's 2021 Fantasy Pro Bowl Team.
The 2021 Pro Bowl rosters have been announced, and while the actual contest has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we can still dive into this tradition that started back in 1970. The coaches for that contest were John Madden of the Raiders and Dick Nolan of the 49ers. The contest, which the NFC won 27–6, had two Most Valuable Players (LB Fred Carr of the Packers and DB Mel Renfro of the Cowboys).
The game was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and each player from the winning team was rewarded $2,000. The winning players from the 2020 Pro Bowl were awarded $70,000, while the losers took home $65,000.
Had fantasy football been prominent in 1970, the fantasy Pro Bowl team would have included players like John Brodie, Fran Tarkenton, Ron A. Johnson, MacArthur Lane, Gene A. Washington and Dick Gordon. Brodie led all quarterbacks with 2,941 passing yards and 208.5 fantasy points. That total would have been good enough to finish a mere 22nd at the position this season.
Johnson, the top fantasy running back, had 1,514 total yards, 12 total touchdowns and 271.4 fantasy points. That would have earned him a top-four finish among 2020 backs. Washington, the top-scoring wide receiver, recorded 1,100 yards, 12 touchdowns and 235 fantasy points. He would have been the WR15 in 2020.
Times have changed, folks.
Now that we've taken a short trip down memory lane, let's take a look at the best of the best in the here and the now— the 2021 fantasy Pro Bowl squad.
QUARTERBACKS.

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills : Allen led quarterbacks with an impressive 396.1 fantasy points, which ranks as the fifth-most points ever scored in a single season at the position during the Super Bowl era (1966-present). His fantasy point totals have risen in each of his three NFL seasons, during which time he’s rushed for 1,562 yards and 25 touchdowns. He’ll be a top-three quarterback in 2021.
Runner up : Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs.
RUNNING BACKS.
Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints : Kamara led all running backs with a total of 377.8 fantasy points, which was 50 more than the No. 2 runner, Dalvin Cook. He averaged 25.2 fantasy points per game, and Kamara scored 20-plus fantasy points in nine of his 15 games. He has now scored 320-plus fantasy points in three of his first four NFL seasons, and his 326 combined receptions are the most ever recorded by a running back during his first four seasons in the league.
Runner up : Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans.

WIDE RECEIVERS.
Davante Adams, Green Bay Packers : Adams led all receivers with 358.4 fantasy points this past season. He finished with 18 touchdowns catches, which is tied with Mark Clayton (1984) and Sterling Sharpe (1994) for the third-most in a single season during the Super Bowl era. Adams has also recorded a combined 23 touchdown catches since 2019, which leads all wideouts. As long as Aaron Rodgers is back in Green Bay, Adams is a first-round lock in 2021.

The sharps are betting the Buckeyes, and I'm not quite sure why. Ohio State's secondary is trash, so Trevor Lawrence won't have an issue torching it. Meanwhile, Justin Fields was dealing with an injury late in the year. I'm not sure if he's healthy yet, but if he's not, he won't be able to keep up with Lawrence.

Texas A&M vs. North Carolina. Line: Texas A&M by 7.5. Saturday, 8:00 p.m.
Texas A&M got absolutely screwed by the college football playoff committee. They deserved to make the playoff over both Notre Dame and Ohio State. However, they're just not going to have the motivation to play this game over a nondescript North Carolina squad.
Ohio State vs. Alabama. Line: Alabama by 9. Monday, 8:00.
We had two tough beats in earlier picks, but Ohio State covering was not one of them. The Buckeyes were terrific against Clemson, as Justin Fields was much healthier than he was in the Big Ten championship. He got banged up in the semi-final, but with extra time to heal, he should be fine for this game. If so, I like him to cover the spread. I love getting a touchdown or more with great quarterbacks, as there will definitely be back-door potential. I like Alabama to win this game, but the Buckeyes should be able to keep it close.
