この度、クロックワークメモリオンがゲームシステム、デザイン、イラストなど、全てが新しくなって帰って来ました。

長い間、ガチャ、コレクションを続けてくださったユーザーの皆様には、深く感謝すると共に心よりお詫び申し上げます。

印刷して遊ぶプリントアウトカードゲームのジャンルを確立させるため、5年間に渡り出来る限りのことをしてきましたが、どうしても壁を打ち破ることができませんでした。

2017年頃から十分なサービスを配信していくことも困難となり、ユーザーの皆様には申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱいです。

しかし、こんな中でもメモリオンを遊んでくれるユーザーさん、ガチャをしてくれるユーザーさんがいらっしゃり、どうしてもこのまま終えることができませんでした。

今後について1年以上悩んだ結果、トレーディングカードゲームとしてリニューアルすることを決めました。

そして2018年11月よりクラウドファンディングを行い、多くの支援者様のお蔭でこうして再スタートを切ることができました。

サイト開設から5年、離れていったユーザーさんも沢山いらっしゃると思います。

長きに渡り色々な形に変化してきましたが、クロックワークメモリオンに一瞬でも関わった人たちは私にとっての宝です。

当サイトについてですが、来年2月を目標に現在のルールに合わせてリニューアルを行う予定です。

皆様が集めたコレクションが無駄にならないよう計画しております。

クロックワークメモリオンの目標はカードゲーム業界に新しい風を取り入れることです。

そしてオリジナルカードゲームとして誰もが認める「日本一」になることです。

原作もアニメもないカードゲームがその地位を確立させるには大きなエネルギーを集める必要があります。

п»їWhat was the probability that Barack Obama would win the US election?
On the face of it this seems an odd question. After all, he won. But before the election it was uncertain whether Obama would win, and probability is the way that uncertainty is quantified, so maybe it is reasonable to ask what that probability was.
We know that there were betting odds вЂ“ a betting exchange such as Intrade allows people both to accept or make bets and so converges, at any point in time, to a certain set of odds at which people are willing to be either the better or the bookmaker. This prediction market provides a вЂprobabilityвЂ™ on Obama winning that kept changing for the year before the election вЂ“ this is shown in Figure 1 with some of the main events of the year marked in.
'Probabilities' of Obama and McCain winning the 2008 US Presidential Election.
A вЂprobabilityвЂ™ of 20% means that people were willing to take and make bets at вЂ4 to 1 againstвЂ™, which means that if someone put ВЈ1 on Obama winning, they would receive back ВЈ4 winnings plus their stake to make ВЈ5 in total. [I donвЂ™t usually gamble, but in January 2008 I did place an online bet of ВЈ1 on Obama at 4 to 1 odds , in the middle of a lecture to a post-graduate class in Cambridge in order to illustrate how odds transform to probabilities: this choice was treated with some derision at the time. Gambling during a lecture probably also broke some medieval statute of the University!].
But do these betting odds really represent the probability? How does this fit with how probability is taught in school? In fact what does probability mean? Does it even exist? These are reasonable questions to ask, and we quickly get into some tricky philosophical issues.
Assessing probability in a non-repeatable situation.
LetвЂ™s look at the different ways we might think about probability, and whether each way might tell us what the probability of Obama winning might have been.
The Classical idea of probability is based on equally likely outcomes: if there are $N$ possible outcomes the probability of each one is $1/N$. This is what is generally taught in schools, and works fine for coins, dice and other physical objects where it may be reasonable to assume some symmetry between the outcomes. In the election there were two main candidates, so would the probability of Obama winning be 50%? Just because there are two alternatives does not mean they are equally likely. And in fact there were up to 14 other candidates including names that could be written in, depending on the state, but a probability of 1/15 seems even more unreasonable. So the classical view does not work here. The frequency interpretation is based on what proportion of events happen in the long run: for example, we might say the probability of a dropped piece of toast landing butter-side down is 80% if that is the proportion of times it happens if we keep droping toast (in controlled conditions) for millions of times. But this interpretation is difficult to apply to specific events such as Obama becoming President since they are essentially unique. We would need to place the event in a class of repeatable opportunities that stretch into the future, such as вЂblack men becoming presidentвЂ™. Looking into the past we note that there have been 43 Presidents of the USA of whom precisely 0 have been black, so the current observed proportion is 0/43. Does this mean the best estimate of the probability that Obama becoming President was 0%? Clearly this would be ridiculous. Even if we were misguided enough to place Obama within this class of events, there is a better way of working out a probability which will be explained below. Another possibility that has been suggested is that there is some true underlying вЂdegree of beliefвЂ™ in the statement вЂObama will be the next PresidentвЂ™ that, given the knowledge that we have, it would be logical to hold. This proposal leaves open the question of how to estimate this quantity and does not seem helpful in this situation. Rather more attractive is the idea that there is some true underlying propensity for an event to happen вЂ“ this is an objective state of the world but needs to be estimated from what we know. One mental picture for this is to consider all the possible ways in which things might turn out, and then think of what proportion of these possible futures end up with Obama being President. This approach seems a bit shaky from a philosophical point of view (can we really think of the set of вЂpossible futuresвЂ™?), but means that we can think of probability as a frequency without having to think of some class into which to embed the event we are interested in. The final way of thinking of this probability comes back to the betting: the probability is essentially the odds you are willing to accept in a bet based on your own subjective judgement. The betting exchange probabilities plotted above provides a kind of group assessment. Such probabilities could be interpreted as your best current estimate of the вЂtrueвЂ™ probability (which is not directly measurable).
Alternatively, and a view that I prefer, we can say that the probability is not an estimate of any actual quantity in the outside world, but simply an assessment of the odds that You are willing to take. You don't have to actually place any bets: Your probability that Obama will be President is, say, 50% if you are indifferent between the following two options: either (a) obtaining a reward if Obama becomes President, and (b) obtaining the same reward if a flipped coin comes up heads.
The attractive thing about this interpretation of probability is that it does not matter whether the event is truly unpredictable, or whether it is pre-ordained and you just donвЂ™t happen to know how things will turn out. For example, before I flip a coin, you may say your odds are 50:50 on heads. If I flip the coin but cover up the result , your odds should not change, even though the uncertainty is now due to our ignorance rather than any essential unpredictability. If I then look at the coin but don't show you , then Your probability should still be 50%, even though mine is either 0 or 100%.
So this view says that probability does not exist , but is simply a numerical expression of Your personal uncertainty, given the current information. Rather strangely, it means that probabilities can be quantified but not measured, rather like the value of anything, whether a painting or a loaf of bread, does not objectively exist but depends on what people are willing to pay.
Assessing probabilities in repeatable situations.
Things are are made easier if we see the current event as part of a sequence stretching back into the past and forward into the future, and we have no reason to think that any member of the sequence is systematically different from any other. We call the events вЂexchangeableвЂ™, and if we are willing to assume this (which we would not for Obama), there is a neat way of assessing the probability of the next event.
An Italian actuary called de Finetti showed that if we are willing to assume exchangeability, then it is as if there is some true underlying chance for the event to happen, we just donвЂ™t know what it is. In the long run the proportion of events that occur will tend to this underlying chance.
Suppose we have observed $n$ possibilities for an event to occur, and it has actually occurred in $r$ of them? What is the chance it will occur at the next opportunity? This is a classic problem, dealt with by the clergymen Thomas Bayes in an article published in 1763 and also by Laplace in 1814. Laplace provided the simple rule:
But this number [the odds of the sun coming up tomorrow] is far greater for him who, seeing in the totality of phenomena the principle regulating the days and seasons, realizes that nothing at present moment can arrest the course of it.
showing that applying his formula in an unthinking manner can be absurd.
So suppose you are told that a bag contains a mixture of black and white balls, but you are not told the proportion of each. You draw out 10 balls, putting each back after you have drawn it, and 3 of them are black. What is the chance that the next is black? Well, assuming that the balls are well-mixed, and that you thought before you started that all proportions were equally likely, then the chance is 4/12 = 1/3.
LaplaceвЂ™s law of succession can be obtained with some basic integral calculus: have a look at an explanation of Laplace's analysis.
So now you know how to use past evidence to assess the chances of future events, but only if you think that the future is going to carry on just like the past, and that can be a very dangerous assumption: if you want an example, think of the free-range turkey on Christmas Eve, happily looking forward to the next day of food and shelter, just as he has always known in the past.

11 Years Ago Today, Barack Obama Was The Heavy Favorite To Win The 2008 Presidential Election.
On an unusually warm 60 degree Nov. 4 evening in ChicagoвЂ™s Grant Park, Barack Obama delivered his victory speech upon being declared the winner of the 2008 Presidential ElectionвЂ”becoming the first African American to be elected President of the United States.
This pivotal moment in U.S. history arrived exactly 11 years ago today.
While many Americans pondered whether the country was вЂњreadyвЂќ to elect a black President leading up to that day, one group of professionals had Obama listed as the clear favorite before the country would cast a single vote.
Wagering on the general election is a relatively new endeavor, and prediction betting markets were much less popular than they are today.
Online sportsbooks had dabbled with offering odds here and there, but a lot of the credit goes to PredictIt, who really injected the idea of betting on politics into the mainstream when it launched in 2014.
To give you an idea of how popular political betting is today: According to PinnacleвЂ”one of the worldвЂ™s most well-known sportsbooksвЂ”the amount wagered on U.S. election at just their site increased by 290 times between 2008 and 2016.
I say all of this because finding records of the general election betting odds on ObamaвЂ™s victory over John McCain in 2008 have been lost to historyвЂ”for the most part.
However, the consensus online appears to be that Obama was the clear favorite heading in election night. The most reputable source comes from Politico, who documented the 2008 odds from the U.K.-based sportsbooks.
Before the votes were cast, Obama was listed at 1/10 odds (-1000), and when converted to an implied probability, we can see that the oddsmakers gave him a 90.91% of winning the 2008 Presidential Election.
When removing the vigorish (a.k.a. вЂњjuiceвЂќ), hereвЂ™s a look at both candidates true probability of winning the election on Nov. 4 exactly 11 years ago:

Oddsmakers had Obama listed as a heavy betting favorite, and thatвЂ™s exactly how the 2008 election played out.
Obama would go on to win the general election in a landslide, receiving 365 electoral votes (52.9% of the popular vote) compared to McCainвЂ™s 173 electoral votes (45.7% of the popular vote).
But the key to futures is wagering correctly well before the outcome is known.
The return on investment on Nov. 4 for ObamaвЂ™s victory wasnвЂ™t impressive since every $100 only won $10.
Timing is everything. Because in just three years, Obama went from distance longshot to heavy favorite to become the 44th POTUS on election nightвЂ”and the rest is history.
And 11 years later, the volatile political climate is arguably even harder to predict, and it may be a while until we see another landslide victory.
Today, the country seems to be split on pretty much everything, regardless of the issue or topic being discussed.
But you can bet that from this point forward, the bookmakers will be the first to paint a picture of a candidateвЂ™s chances to win an election at a given moment in time due to the growing interest from the public.
Ultimately, itвЂ™s up to you to correctly guess the moment and choose when and who will beat the odds. And with that being said, here are current odds to win the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.

Barack Obama Was The Biggest Recorded Favorite Before an Election.

There is now just one short day before voters head to the polls to the United States to determine the next President.
Polls currently have Joe Biden way ahead, though Trump supporters will adamantly remind you that the polls were completely wrong in 2016.
How do these numbers compare to past elections?
To start, we don't have much data to rely on, as betting on the Presidential election really only started when online sports betting took off.
So, we can go back to the 2004 US Presidential election, between George W. Bush and John Kerry, as online sports betting didn't really start to take off until that point.
The 2008 election between John McCain and Barack Obama wasn't close when it came to the betting odds, as Obama entered election day as a -1250 favorite to win (which means that $1,250 would have had to have been wagered on Obama to win just $100 back - a massive favorite). These odds basically implied that McCain essentially had no shot of winning. The Republicans would end up getting mauled in this election, mainly thanks to the collapse of the subprime mortgage market and resulting fallout.
The 2012 election was a bit closer, though Obama was still a big favorite to defeat Mitt Romney, as he entered election day as a -357 favorite.
Hillary Clinton, finally, entered election day as a -400 favorite.
Hillary Clinton, however, was the lone candidate to enjoy a commanding lead at the sportsbooks prior to the election, only to lose.
In short - betting odds prior to an election don't necessarily predict the future, as evidenced by the 2016 Presidential election, when Trump "beat the odds" to shock Hillary Clinton.

Bettors give McCain bid long odds.

Futures traders and sports books are setting overwhelming odds that the Illinois Democrat will win the presidency on Nov. 4.
Ladbrokes, a massive online sports book based in the United Kingdom, puts the odds of an Obama win at 1-10, meaning a bettor must risk $10 to win one more. John McCain, meanwhile, is an 11-2 shot, so a dollar posted on him would pay out an additional $5.50. The site now pays out less for a bet on Obama winning in a 370-plus electoral landslide than it does for a McCain victory of any margin.
Paddy Power, Ireland's largest bookmaker, no longer gives McCain any chance at all, having called the election for Obama on Oct. 15 and paid out over a million pounds on bets for the Democrat, whose line had moved from 50-1 in May of 2005 to 1-9 when the book closed.
The wide spread between books вЂ” whose odds aren't intended to be predictive, but to split the action such that the house comes out ahead no matter who wins вЂ” stems from the relatively small size of the betting pool, which means they may not accurately represent expectations among the non-betting public.
Futures markets, in which buyers and sellers negotiate a price for a contract that pays off if a postulated event in fact occurs, are also down on McCain. An option that pays $1 should McCain win now sells for just 14 cents at Dublin-based futures market Intrade and 13 cents on the Iowa Electronic Market. Both prices are record lows.
Shortly after the Republican National Convention, McCain was a slight favorite in several markets, with a $1 option going for 54 cents on Intrade, and Ladbrokes giving the Republican 5-4 odds.
While polls show a snapshot in time of who voters want to win, betting lines and futures trades show who bettors think will win. The good news for McCain is that the gamblers have not always been right.
Just before the New Hampshire primary, Ladbrokes listed Obama as a prohibitive 1-33 shot to win, but he ended up losing that contest to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Intrade CEO John Delaney concedes that the predictive value of his market has been "mixed" so far this year. "They were sometimes wrong during the primaries, but often showed better clarity than the polls," he said.
Trading volume on the site averages 10,000 trades a day of $1 million worth of presidential futures, up over 700 percent from 2004.
The still relatively small size of the presidential betting markets, though, has left them open to charges of manipulation. Nate Silver, founder of the widely read electoral projections Web site FiveThirtyEight, noticed in September that "something is going on over at Intrade with respect to the pricing of the Obama and McCain contracts," when Obama futures in September were priced about 10 points less than at other markets, "the equivalent of the Giants being 3-point favorites at the Bellagio Sportsbook, and 7-point favorites at the Mirage down the block."
An InTrade investigation found that one trader made repeated countercyclical buys of McCain futures large enough to raise their price вЂ” thus purchasing the options for considerably more than the same product would have cost on another market.
InTrade's numbers are now widely posted around the Web, and seen, along with poll numbers, as a reliable gauge of the candidates' prospects вЂ” meaning someone with deep pockets has good reason to bend the numbers, and thus the perception of the race.
At a posting on the InTrade site, Delaney reported that "an extensive investigation" found that the single investor responsible for the fluctuations was "using our markets in good faith and in the ordinary course of their business," and "using increased depth in these markets to manage certain risks," which he later told the New York Times could mean another "bookmaker using Intrade to hedge risk from their own customers.вЂќ
Still, the markets have historically been very accurate in general elections.
In 2004, futures traders at Intrade not only correctly priced President Bush to win, but also got the winner of each state right.
Americans are barred from participating in InTrade's presidential futures market, whose members are mostly from Europe and the Middle East, and which is currently priced to show Obama winning many crucial swing states, including North Carolina (where an option paying off $1 for an Obama win now costs 64 cents, Pennsylvania (88), Indiana (59), Ohio (75), Colorado (85), Missouri (64), Virginia (80) and Florida (66).
Iowa Business School professor Thomas Rietz, who runs the Iowa Electronic Market, said futures markets are "a lot less volatile than polls."
One reason is that "heavily partisan traders tend to hang onto contracts that they shouldn't," Rietz said. "Buy-and-hold traders buy candidates they like, [while] price setters and volatility comes from independents."

The Detroit Lions met Matthew Stafford's trade demands last weekend. Could the Philadelphia Eagles soon follow suit?
The Eagles are "getting close" to trading quarterback Carson Wentz, The Philadelphia Inquirer's Les Bowen reported Friday.
Bowen cites the Colts as the top suitor for Wentz; Indianapolis' head coach is former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, and the Colts are expected to hire Press Taylor, Wentz's former QB coach in Philly, according to Bowen.

The Patriots also are in the market for a quarterback this offseason. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer noted Friday that New England is "checking in on everything" on the QB front, so it's possible Bill Belichick at least gave the Eagles a call about Wentz.
Philly may demand a lot for its 28-year-old quarterback, though: Breer suggested the Eagles are looking for a return similar to what Detroit got for Stafford (Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick), while Bowen pegged their asking price at "multiple draft picks."
Wentz also carries a $34.7 million cap hit and is coming off the worst campaign of his NFL career, with a 57.4% completion rate, 16 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions in 12 games.
The No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft could be a reclamation project for the Patriots, but it doesn't look like they're a front-runner for Wentz, as Bowen notes the Chicago Bears could make a run at the QB if he doesn't land in Indy.
Jeff Howe of The Athletic also reported that the Patriots "don't sound like serious suitors" in the Wentz sweepstakes, so it seems like the Pats will look elsewhere to find their 2021 starting QB.

The recent losses of Robert Saleh and Martin Mayhew come with an upside for the 49ers.
The 49ers will land compensatory selections in the third rounds of each of the next three drafts, beginning this year. The NFL draft is scheduled for Thursday, April 29, through Saturday, May 1.
Saleh, the 49ers' defensive coordinator the past four seasons, was hired as head coach of the New York Jets. Mayhew left his post as 49ers vice president of player personnel to become the Washington Football Team's general manager.
Due to a resolution the league passed this season, the 49ers received compensatory draft picks for developing minority candidates for top-level NFL positions.
The 49ers figure to factor into speculation around some of the quarterback situations that will unfold this NFL offseason.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) вЂ” Businesses that want to operate fantasy sports betting in the 47 Louisiana parishes that approved it two years ago can start applying in February, under action by the state gambling board Thursday.
The Louisiana Gaming Control Board adopted the final regulations and licensing application needed for the online cash prize competitions to start later this year, as early as April or May.
Maj. Chuck McNeal, with the Louisiana State PoliceвЂ™s Gaming Enforcement Division, told the board that fantasy sports contest operators can start submitting the applications Feb. 19. He said the suitability investigations conducted by the State Police usually take 60 days to 90 days to complete before an entity can appear before the Louisiana Gaming Control Board for a gambling license.
Under that timeline, fantasy sports betting operations could be up and running by the spring, if the gambling board approves their licenses.
In fantasy sports, people create imaginary teams of real-life sports players and score points based on how those players perform in actual games. Websites such as DraftKings and FanDuel charge an entry fee and offer payouts to winners.
Voters in nearly three-quarters of LouisianaвЂ™s 64 parishes agreed in the November 2018 election to legalize fantasy sports betting. Lawmakers have since set the tax rates and the regulatory process. All that remains are the licensing decisions for individual operators from the Gaming Control Board.
Participants in the competitions have to be at least 21 years old. The games only will be permitted in parishes where voters authorized it, but anybody will be able to log into the online sites if they travel to those parishes.

It is no shock to see Jay Wright guiding the Villanova basketball program to another great season on the main line. The Wildcats, who lost star forward Saddiq Bey to the NBA last season, have faced several big hurdles this season. Most notably, Nova dealt with a COVID-19 outbreak that affected Wright and forced the program to shut down for over three weeks.
Wright quickly led Villanova to two gritty Big East wins over Seton Hall and Providence. Led by star point guard Collin Gillespie (15.9 points per game) and forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (14.8 points per game/ 6.7 rebounds) the Wildcats have balance on both offense and defense. The ability of shooting guard Justin Moore (13.3 points per game) to penetrate the lane combined with the recent emergence of forward Jermaine Samuels on the offensive end bodes well for Villanova as we head towards March.
Villanova will look to defeat their Big East rival Seton Hall for the second time this season. The Wildcats hung on for a 76-74 win at the Finneran Pavilion back on January 19, but failed to cover as 8.5-point favorites. The matchup marked VillanovaвЂ™s first game since the December 23 shutdown and the Wildcats displayed clear stamina issues in the second half. However, as Villanova typically displays under WrightвЂ™s tenure, they battled and found a way to win against a rival who always seems to play the three-time National Champions down to the wire.
The No. 3 Wildcats are 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big East are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games. On the other side, Seton Hall is coming off a crushing 85-81 loss to Creighton on Thursday - blowing a 16-point second half lead. The Pirates have struggled of late losing three of their last four after an impressive 6-1 SU and ATS streak. They have a balanced scoring attack led by senior forward transfer Sam Hauser (15.0 points per game/ 7.8 rebounds) who leads the team with 74 three-pointers in 13 games. During their current seven-game winning streak Virginia has been profitable to back at the windows going 5-2 against the spread (ATS) during that span.
Virginia Tech heads in off an impressive 62-51 road win at South Bend over Notre Dame covering as a 1-point favorite on Wednesday. The Hokies have won eight of their last 10 games, going an impressive 7-3 ATS over that stretch. Virginia Tech is led by junior forward Keve Aluma (13.9 points per game/ 7.4 rebounds). The loss of the teamвЂ™s second leading scorer Tyrece Radford (11.1), who has been suspended by the school indefinitely, is a huge blow to a Hokies team that has dropped four straight in the series against their in-state rival.

Duke is riding a four-game winning streak against Miami and this is the lone meeting this season. Duke (7вЂ“5, 5вЂ“3 ACC) travels to Miami following two wins at home. The Blue Devils posted a 75вЂ“68 victory against Georgia Tech on Jan. 26 and an impressive 79вЂ“53 win against Clemson on Saturday. Prior to that, Duke lost 74вЂ“67 to No. 20 Virginia Tech, 79вЂ“73 to Pittsburgh and 70вЂ“65 to Louisville, during three road games. While this wouldnвЂ™t be considered a quality win, the Blue Devils need to post a convincing victory to impress the March Madness selection committee.
Miami (6ВвЂ“10, 2вЂ“9 ACC) has struggled throughout the season and will not qualify for the March Madness tournament for the first time since 2015. After beginning the year with a 3-0 record, the Hurricanes are 3-10 over their last 13 games. MiamiвЂ™s last win was on Jan. 16 when the Hurricanes upset No. 16 Louisville 78ВвЂ“72 as 4.5-point home underdogs. That was followed by four losses as Miami was held to 59 or fewer points in each game and were outscored by a 303-229 margin.
Posting similar numbers on defense, Miami is allowing 69.0 points per game (ppg) while Duke is giving up 70.2 ppg. The Blue Devils have an edge on offense as they are averaging 74.2 ppg while the Hurricanes are scoring 65.5 ppg. Miami has dealt with numerous injuries this season and may be without leading scorer Isaiah Wong who was injured against Wake Forest on Saturday. This is a big number to cover, for an average Duke team, but I donвЂ™t see Miami keeping pace.

That win snapped a 10-game winning streak by the Crimson Tide.
Texas Tech (12вЂ“5, 4вЂ“4 Big 12) returns home following a 76вЂ“71 win over LSU in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday. The Red Raiders closed the game on a 12вЂ“0 scoring run and covered as 3.5-point favorites on the road. The win snapped a two-game losing streak after the Red Raiders lost 68вЂ“60 on the road against No. 2 Baylor and 88вЂ“87 at home to No. 11 West Virginia. Texas Tech has won five of the last six meetings between these Big 12 Conference rivals.
These teams have similar numbers on offense as Oklahoma is averaging 76.9 ppg and Texas Tech is scoring 75.5 ppg. The Red Raiders have an edge on defense as they are allowing 62.2 ppg while the Sooners are giving up 67.3 ppg. Oklahoma was without leading scorer Austin Reaves on Saturday, due to COVIDвЂ“19, and he is expected to miss this game as well. While this line looks like a trap - I am taking the points and betting on the Sooners keeping this contest close.

Over the past few years, the emergence of daily fantasy sports has led to a renaissance for conventional sports betting. The anti-gambling stigma that existed for decades is fading in American popular culture, opening the door for a massive, multibillion-dollar legal sports betting industry to emerge.
With sports betting now legal in many states, millions of sports fans will be looking to enter the betting market for the first time. But where do you begin if youвЂ™re unfamiliar with the terminology?
HereвЂ™s an introduction into how to bet on sports. WeвЂ™ll be adding to this series in the coming weeks.
How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips.

1. Favorites vs. Underdogs.
When the oddsmakers release a betting line on a game, the first thing they do is decide which team should be the favorite and which should be the underdog.
The favorite is the team that is expected to win the game and will get a minus sign next to its odds, while the underdog is expected to lose and gets a plus sign. If the game is a toss-up, books will open it as a вЂњpickвЂќ or вЂњpickвЂ™em.вЂќ Click to return to table of contents .
2. Spreads.
There are two main ways to bet on a favorite or an underdog. The first is the point spread, which is a bet on the margin of victory. A favorite вЂњgivesвЂќ points, while an underdog вЂњgetsвЂќ points.
For example, say the Patriots are 7-point favorites (-7) against the Jets.
If you bet on the Patriots, they need to win the game by 8 points or more for you to win your bet. If the Patriots win by 8 points or more, you вЂњcover.вЂќ If the Patriots win by exactly 7 points, that is called a вЂњpush,вЂќ which means you get back the money you originally bet.
If the Patriots win by 6 points or fewer (or lose the game straight-up), you lose your bet.
Spreads are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on higher-scoring sports like football and basketball.
3. Moneylines.
The second way to bet on a favorite or an underdog is on the moneyline. This is based solely on which team will win the game.
Favorites are given a вЂњminusвЂќ designation, such as -150, -200 or -500. If a favorite is -200, that means you have to risk $200 to win $100. If the favorite wins, you get $100, but if the favorite loses, youвЂ™re out $200.
Because favorites are expected to win, you assume more risk when betting on them.
Moneylines are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on lower-scoring sports like baseball, hockey and soccer.
4. Over/Unders (Totals)
In addition to setting a line for the favorite and the underdog, oddsmakers will also set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is called the total or over/under.
Bettors can then wager on whether or not the game will go Over or Under the total.
For example, an NBA game between the Celtics and Bulls might have a total of 215. You could either bet the Over 215 or the Under 215. If you bet the Over 215 and the total points scored end up being 216 or higher, you win your bet. If the total points scored are 214 or fewer, you lose.
5. What Is the -110 Number Listed Next to My Bet?
The oddsmakers put a вЂњtaxвЂќ on every bet, which is typically called the вЂњjuiceвЂќ or вЂњvigвЂќ (short for вЂњvigorishвЂќ). The juice is the commission you have to pay to the sportsbook for them to accept your wager.
Say the Duke Blue Devils are -5 (-110) вЂ¦ that means if you want to bet on Duke as a 5-point favorite, you need to risk $110 to win $100.
You always have to risk more on a favorite than youвЂ™d win on an underdogвЂ¦otherwise, sportsbooks would be out of business.

FanDuel CEO Matt King joked with MarketWatch that the Super Bowl should fall into the вЂњessential travelвЂќ recommendations from the CDC.
King, the head of the New York-based bookmaker and daily fantasy sports site since 2017, is an annual attendee of the big game, but this year decided it вЂњdidnвЂ™t make senseвЂќ to go. Like millions of other NFL fans, King will be watching the Chiefs take on the Bucs on TV.
In an interview with MarketWatch, King weighed in on how the pandemic is accelerating sports betting, FanDuelвЂ™s interest in becoming a public company, and if legal sports betting in New York state is a вЂњgame-changer.вЂќ
MarketWatch: Is FanDuel doing any physical events for the Super Bowl this year?
King: ItвЂ™s pretty limited this year. Last year we did a bunch of events with players and some events with a few of our partners that are down there. A series of smaller things.
MarketWatch: Do you anticipate more money being wagered on the Super Bowl this year than in past years?
King: Yeah thereвЂ™s going to be a lot more. Obviously we are in a lot more states, thatвЂ™s the tailwind, but even the states that weвЂ™ve been operating in the last two years are up significantly this year.
MarketWatch: What are your total bet projections for the game?
King: Our business is up dramatically. IвЂ™m not sure we are disclosing our specific projections but itвЂ™ll be by far the biggest game on record for us. Many orders of magnitude up year-over-year. The statistic I can give you because itвЂ™s on the tip of my tongue is that in the first 28 days of 2021, weвЂ™ve done $1 billion in handle on the sportsbook. We didnвЂ™t hit $1 billion in handle in 2020 until Q4.
MarketWatch: Any particular growth areas in your business that youвЂ™re seeing? Something like live-betting for example?
King: The live-betting has been pretty popular since day one. I would say the big story this year is going to be our same-game parlay product. This is where you can bet on multiple things happening in the same game and we are really the only ones in the market that offers it. The Super Bowl is perfect for same-game parlay betting. It allows people to say вЂњhere are the three guys who I think are going to score a touchdown.вЂќ The customer acceptance of the product so far this year has been off the charts.
MarketWatch: Florida, the state where the Super Bowl is, was close to legalizing sports betting in 2020, but it never happened. How closely are you watching new states attempting to legalize gambling?
King: Our head lawyer once gave me a good piece of advice which was вЂњthe chances of passing any law is 50/50 until it actually passes.вЂќ ItвЂ™s either going to pass or itвЂ™s not and IвЂ™ve taken that to heart. The way we look at the world is we think about the total number of states that are considering sportsbetting and we assume that some percentage of those are going to pass. ItвЂ™s just hard to predict which ones are going to get it over the goal line. We are confident that youвЂ™re going to see a number of states pass it this year, we just donвЂ™t know which ones.
MarketWatch: The four states with the highest populations: California, Texas, New York and Florida have not legalized sports betting yet, do you see those states as game-changers for your business?
King: We certainly see every new state as a market opportunity, and obviously the bigger the state the bigger the market opportunity. But, the real change is what is already happening. Sportsbetting is becoming part of the narrative around sports. ItвЂ™s embedded in how we talk about sports and even in those big states itвЂ™s a bit of a when вЂ” not if вЂ” question because people are understanding the size of scope of the illegal market and the fact that itвЂ™s just common sense legislation to try and put it out of business. I donвЂ™t necessarily view them as game-changers because the reality is we are already in the middle of the game. Certainly a big state will accelerate things.
MarketWatch: Do you think the pandemic will force states to legalize sports betting faster?
King: I think it will be the case. I think it will be the case for sports betting and igaming. You have two things going on. One is the fiscal pressures for any individual state are greater than they have ever been. I do think states will look for ways to help them claw out of fiscal holes that were created by the pandemic. But the other thing is more states passed laws around sports betting and igaming and demonstrated that they are win-win common sense legislation. It allows consumers to do what they love, and it generates tax revenue for the state and puts an illegal market out of business. ItвЂ™s a pretty easy choice to make.
MarketWatch: Are you guys advertising during the Super Bowl this year?
King: We are not going to be during the game. We didnвЂ™t think it made sense to do a Super Bowl ad this year.
MarketWatch: Do you think the NFL would like an ad for a sportsbook during the game?
King: The NFL approves all ads for the game, (laughs) so they are not going to let a sportsbook ad go during the game at this point.
King: Our focus is on the fan, and where we focus on winning is in delivering the best product and best fan experience on the market. When we get customer feedback and look at the market share reports, itвЂ™s clear we have the number one business out there. And that makes us very proud. Stock prices, as weвЂ™ve seen over the last few weeks (laughs) can be somewhat ephemeral.
MarketWatch: What about from a вЂњhigh tide raises all boatsвЂќ line of thinking?
King: From a perspective of people understanding more about the industry and how itвЂ™s additive to the sports ecosystem, thatвЂ™s a good thing. So anything that does that is a good thing. ItвЂ™s also a big market. We donвЂ™t look at things as a zero-sum game; we look at it as we are in the early innings of a big business game. That competition breeds innovation.
MarketWatch: In our interview last year, we discussed the idea of FanDuel as a public company. Is going public something that you have discussed with your team?
MarketWatch: Is election betting something youвЂ™re interested in?
King: I think clearly people find election betting as an interesting way to engage in politics. ThereвЂ™s a lot of legal restrictions in the U.S. that donвЂ™t exist in Europe. Our focus has been offering free to play games on the presidential debates. We can see thereвЂ™s a lot of interest in it. But I think it will be a long time before we see a big election betting market here.
MarketWatch: So the 2024 and 2028 presidential elections, you donвЂ™t anticipate election betting by then?
King: I donвЂ™t think it will be a big thing mostly because regulations will continue to restrict the market and I donвЂ™t see those regulations changing. The demand is definitely there though.
MarketWatch: Who do the sportsbooks need to win?
King: The Super Bowl is not about making or losing money as we talked about last year. ItвЂ™s about giving fans a phenomenal experience. More of the bets are on the Chiefs, so if the Chiefs win and cover the spread we are going to lose a few bucks. The same is true if itвЂ™s a very high scoring game, which is pretty typical.
MarketWatch: What is sports betting like 10 years from now?
King: I think itвЂ™s less about sports betting in isolation and more about the convergence of things like sports betting and gaming in general with sports and sports media. ItвЂ™s safe to say that all the sports rights owners are trying to find new ways to engage fans. I think youвЂ™re going to see some great stuff for the next generation fan experience. You may see new ways to watch sports, a more customized experience.
MarketWatch: A gamification of the actual games?
King: The ability to pop in and out of games more easily based on moments that matter. Reduced latency in the streaming feeds. YouвЂ™ll see some alternative broadcasters, whether itвЂ™s your favorite Twitch personality announcing the game or somebody who may take a more betting oriented look at the game. A more build-your-own experience versus having to consume the same broadcast that 20 million other people are watching.

Consumers will have ample options to place their wagers once online casino gaming and sports betting launches in Michigan at noon Friday, Jan. 22.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board on Tuesday and Wednesday approved authorization for 10 total casinos and their platform providers to begin accepting wagers on Friday.
вЂњI think the reliability will be there across the board,вЂќ Ruddock told MLive in a phone interview. вЂњCertain companies might have a little bit of a difference in their customer service, things like that. Other companies have a little bit of an advantage in the user experience of the mobile app. ItвЂ™ll really depend on what the customerвЂ™s preferences are and what they find important.вЂќ
Among the notable differences between online sportsbooks and casinos include: betting opportunities offered, customer service, ease of financial transactions (type and speed) and promotions offered.
вЂњMichigan set a pretty reasonable tax rate and licensing fee, so the operator burdens are pretty low,вЂќ Ruddock said. вЂњI wouldnвЂ™t expect a ton of differentiation. There will be some just because different business models by different sportsbooks, and what you might see is certain sites steering customers toward more like parlay bets and different bets with larger hold percentages than the straight money line and point spread bets that most people are accustomed to seeing.вЂќ
When signing up for promotions or bonuses, Ruddock said it is important to pay attention to any associated stipulations.
вЂњThereвЂ™s multiple parts of the bonuses,вЂќ he said. вЂњSome are just free money sign up. Usually you have to deposit something. Other ones are what we call a вЂclearвЂ™ bonus. So if you deposit $50 and theyвЂ™re offering you $50 a bonus, you might have to bet your $50 five times, 10 times, however much before you clear that bonus completely. So customers should look at how much they have to wager to clear the bonus and they should also look at if thereвЂ™s a expiration date on those. Those are definitely things that people should look at the fine print of those bonus offers.вЂќ
While the MGCB expects to authorize additional operators and platform providers in the coming days and weeks, hereвЂ™s a look at the 10 platform providers, and their affiliated casinos, that are approved to go live Friday.
DraftKings.
Michigan is the 11th state DraftKings will have a presence in with its online sportsbook вЂ“ more than any other company in the U.S.
DraftKings also is an official sports betting and casino partner of the Detroit Pistons and is offering new customers in Michigan two double-your-money opportunities. On Friday, double your money on the Detroit Pistons to score a 3-point shot. On Sunday, double your money on any NFL team to score a conference championship touchdown.
Meanwhile, DraftKings Casino features a wide variety of games within its library, including 17 blackjack, six roulette and three Baccarat offerings.

FanDuel also is one of the most popular betting sites in the U.S. and is entering its ninth state with its launch in Michigan.

PointsBet is only approved to launch sports betting as of now. It has developed a significant presence in Michigan with long-term partnerships with the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons and Little Caesars Arena.
PointsBet also offers some unique betting options, such as its PointsBetting feature -- a high-risk, high-reward form of betting where customers are either rewarded or docked by how right or wrong their wager was.
It is running two launch promotions:
-- At the end of January, customers with net winnings with PointsBet will have them doubled up to $100 in free bets. For customers who have losses with PointsBet at the end of January, they will have those net losses refunded up to $100 in free bets.
Barstool.
Only BarstoolвЂ™s online sportsbook will launch Friday, with its online casino expected to go live shortly after. It also operates in Pennsylvania.
From noon Friday until 11:59pm Sunday, January 24, Michigan customers will have their first-time deposit on the Barstool Sportsbook mobile app matched with a donation to The Barstool Fund, provided they wager equal or more than their first-time deposit during the weekend. The Chiefs are the public's favorite for Super Bowl 55 with 60% of against the spread bets placed on Kansas City. The Chiefs opened as 3.5-point favorites but some big bets placed on the Buccaneers have dropped the line to a flat 3 points with 52% of the 2021 Super Bowl betting handle placed on Tampa Bay.
The Chiefs still need to win by at least 4 points in order to cover the spread. A win by exactly 3 points now results in a push and all ATS bets being refunded instead of a 3-point loss counting as an ATS win for the Buccaneers.
Super Bowl Over/Under.
Unlike the spread, sharps and the public are aligned with the total. BetMGM reports 66% of O/U tickets and 62% of the handle are both on the Over; however, the line has dropped from an opener of 57.5 to 56.5.
The Chiefs and Buccaneers combining to score 57 or more points is a win for those holding Over tickets on the current total and a final score adding up to 56 or fewer points is a win for the Under.

The Board of Trustees of Liberty All-Star Equity Fund (NYSE: USA) has declared a distribution of $0.19 per share payable on March 8, 2021 to shareholders of record on January 22, 2021 (ex-dividend date of January 21, 2021). A few weeks later Flutter dramatically increased its stake in FanDuel, paying $4.175 billion to purchase FastballвЂ™s 37.2% stake in the company and increase its own total to 95%, according to a December Forbes report.
вЂњThe transaction was just an expression in their belief in the potential for the U.S. market and their support for the strategy that weвЂ™ve been employing for the last few years,вЂќ said King, who became FanDuelвЂ™s CEO in November, 2017. вЂњFlutterвЂ™s been a really great partner of ours since 2018 and weвЂ™ve benefited from the global affiliation.вЂќ

But Flutter, King added, recognizes the importance of a keyed in local presence to winning in the booming sports betting marketplace. Legal sports betting is now operational in 20 states and Washington D.C., with plenty more on the horizon as part of the gold rush to increase state revenues after the Supreme Court struck down a law banning sports gambling in most states back in 2018.
The biggest domino expected to fall in 2021 is the long-awaited approval of legalized mobile sports betting in New York. That longstanding effort now has the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and is expected to be approved by state lawmakers in the coming weeks and months to help offset a budget deficit in the billions due to the coronavirus pandemic. Cuomo is hoping to generate hundreds of millions in revenue from legal sports betting after neighboring New Jersey had nearly $1 billion in betting handle in December alone, generating $7.6 million in tax revenue for the month.
вЂњWe obviously do see from our New Jersey data that thereвЂ™s a ton of demand from New Yorkers to play,вЂќ said King, whose company currently operates a retail betting location at Tioga Downs Casino Resort upstate in Nichols, N.Y. вЂњMost of the people that drive over the bridge or go through the tunnel to New Jersey to place bets prefer to do that from New York. So we would be excited about giving our customers easier access to the products that they love.вЂќ

As more states continue to legalize or consider legalizing sports betting in some form in 2021 and beyond, King is trying to utilize FanDuel and FlutterвЂ™s decades of experience in horse racing, online casinos and daily fantasy sports to help ensure that the company is not just first in the market in these areas, but also that things are done correctly and in accordance with state and local laws and guidelines. HeвЂ™s also of the belief that the appetite for sports betting was always there. But now that states are able to legalize and regulate sports gambling, itвЂ™s proof in KingвЂ™s mind that the illegal and offshore market has been so massive for so long.
What he and FanDuel are now focused on is balancing the businessвЂ™ growth with investing heavily in product, tech, the customer base and areas like compliance and responsible gaming. For King, the biggest obstacle for growth is the same thing as whatвЂ™s going to drive it: The continued adoption of sports betting across the U.S.
The North Carolina State graduate is pleased with the momentum heвЂ™s seeing in various state houses, but is trying to be patient as lawmakers go through the process of drawing up, debating and passing common sense legislation that makes sense for both the voters and helps drive revenue for the states and the approved betting providers.
вЂњWhat people fail to realize is that for the regulators, a lot of times itвЂ™s their first online product theyвЂ™re ever regulating,вЂќ King said. вЂњAnd we work in partnership with the regulators to make sure the right infrastructure and regulations get put in place from day one. And that process just takes time.вЂќ
Aside from the growing number of states passing sports betting legislation, the biggest change in the landscape in 2021 in KingвЂ™s mind is the expansion of sports betting into the national conversation about the sports themselves. While some teams, leagues, networks and outlets have embraced conversationвЂ” including TNTвЂ™s integration with FanDuel for its flagship Thursday night NBA broadcastsвЂ” some networks like CBS VIAC with its NFL coverage for the Super Bowl are still shying away from overt references and conversations surrounding a subject that is still taboo for many across the country.
вЂњI think people have seen how sports betting enriches the fan experience and the narrative around sports, even if those people arenвЂ™t betting themselves,вЂќ King said, without referencing to or calling out any network or outlet in particular. вЂњThis isnвЂ™t just about talking about who somebodyвЂ™s picks are. I think thereвЂ™s an incredible amount of richness and data in whatвЂ™s going on in terms of who people are betting on, how lines are changing that just provides additional content for the broadcasters to talk about. WeвЂ™re starting to really show people examples of how sports betting information can help them tell better stories. ThatвЂ™s really when the light bulb goes off.вЂќ
FanDuelвЂ™s success in the marketplace has some proverbial light bulbs going off in peopleвЂ™s minds about a possible IPO or spinoff for the company, bringing it public like competitors DraftKings or Penn National Gaming PENN . But King said going public is neither here nor there at this point.
вЂњIt isnвЂ™t an indicator of whether somethingвЂ™s a good business or not,вЂќ he said.
From KingвЂ™s perspective, he said FanDuel is still in the early stage of the market, focused on the product, the customer base and the brand.
вЂњAnd frankly, whether or not youвЂ™re public or private doesnвЂ™t really matter,вЂќ he added matter-of-factly. вЂњIt doesnвЂ™t change the tools in your toolbox, and it doesnвЂ™t change the need to really just have the best product in the market. And so weвЂ™re just focused on kind of building the best business that we can regardless of being public or private.вЂќ
And right now, building the best business for King and FanDuel is trying to seize this unique moment in time as state after state passes legislation that eager sports bettors have awaited for so very long.
