Everything was going for the Green Bay Packers this season– Aaron Rodgers likely secured the NFL MVP award, the Packers clinched home field advantage, and secured a spot in the NFC Championship game. To make things worse, coach Matt LaFleur made a highly-criticized call to kick a field goal instead of attempting to tie the ballgame and Rodgers never got the ball back.
Several key pieces including All Pro center Corey Linsley and a handful of starters are set to become free agents this season. However, storylines will be centered around Rodgers’ future with the Packers. The NFL MVP made comments following their playoff exit indicating his future with the team was “uncertain.” With recently-drafted quarterback Jordan Love waiting, will Green Bay send their franchise guy elsewhere to roll with the youngster?

Davante Adams is projected for 1,200.5 receiving yards with -110 odds on either side. He has topped the projection just once in his six-year career. Aaron Jones’ rushing yards line is set at 1,080.5 with -110 odds on both the Over and Under. Four of 11 listed running backs have a lower projection.
Futures.
Teasers.
Teasers are available on both spread and total bets and allow bettors to adjust the lines to get more profitable higher odds or more secure lower odds in a parlay. Bettors can “buy” or “sell” points to enhance their chances of winning the bet or increase their profit margin. Rodgers again topped 4,000 passing yards while playing all 16 games for the second straight season. He threw for a modest 26 touchdowns, but he tossed just four interceptions. It was Jones’ emergence which truly helped the Packers secure the division crown and a first round bye with a 13-3 record. He rushed for 1,084 yards to be Green Bay’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Eddie Lacy in 2014. He added 474 receiving yards and scored 19 total touchdowns.
The receiving corps, behind No. 1 option Davante Adams, was once again the Packers’ greatest weakness. Adams caught 83 of 127 targets for 997 yards and five touchdowns in just 12 games, but no other player topped 500 receiving yards.
Defensively, the Packers ranked ninth in the NFL with 19.6 points allowed per game. They were 18th with 352.6 total yards allowed per game and they were one of just 10 teams to allow more than 120 rushing yards per game. They shared the league’s third-best turnover differential at plus-12 with 25 takeaways and just 13 giveaways.
In addition to going 13-3 straight up last season, the Packers went 10-6 against the spread in the regular season. They won by an average margin of 3.9 points per game and covered by 0.2 PPG. They were particularly strong at home, going 6-3 ATS and winning by six PPG including the Divisional Round win over the Seahawks. The Packers were 6-10 against the Over/Under in the regular season, falling an average of 2.7 PPG shy of the projected point total. Both of their playoff games topped the projected line.

Week 13's NFL betting odds opened Green Bay as a six-point favorite for this game, with an over/under of right around 46. Early betting action then bumped the Packers to -6.5 and dipped that total to 45.
Packers vs. Giants Set-Up.
Green Bay is coming off a pathetic performance last Sunday night at San Francisco, a 37-8 shellacking at the hands of the 49ers. The Packers fell behind 7-0 less than two minutes into the game, trailed 23-0 at the half, pulled to within 23-8 in the third quarter, but faded from there and whiffed ATS as three-point dogs.
On the night Green Bay got out-gained by San Francisco 339-198, and most of the yardage the Packers produced came in catch-up mode. Green Bay also allowed five sacks, converted just 1/15 on 3rd downs, and gave up several big plays on defense.
Two weeks ago, the Packers beat Carolina 24-16, but just before that, they lost at San Diego 26-11. Green Bay's also been out-gained each of its last three games.
Still, at 8-3 overall, the Packers are tied with Minnesota for the lead in the NFC North, and they own the head-to-head tiebreaker on the Vikings.
New York, meanwhile, lugs a seven-game losing streak into Sunday, after falling at Chicago last week 19-14. The Giants actually led the Bears 7-3 at the half, fell behind 19-7, got back within one score with four minutes to go but came up empty from there.
New York did, however, pick up a back-door cover as a six-point dog.
On the day the Giants got out-gained 335-244. So New York's been out-gained each of its last four games, and six of its previous seven.
However, four of the Giants' last five losses have come by seven points or less.
At 2-9 overall, the G-Men are relegated to playing out the rest of this season for pride and the hope of a brighter future.
These teams last met in the wild-card round of the playoffs three seasons, a 38-13 Green Bay victory. But that was a quarterback and two coaches ago for New York and a coach ago for the Packers.

The Packers were routed by San Francisco 37-8 on Sunday Night Football in Week 12. Meanwhile, the Giants lost 19-14 to the Chicago Bears. The last meeting between the two teams was a 38-13 Packers win in 2017. The Giants are just 1-4 at home while the Packers are 3-2 on the road. The Packers (21st) and Giants (25th) both rank in the bottom third when it comes to total offensive yards per game. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers has 18 passing touchdowns against two interceptions. RB Aaron Jones has 11 touchdowns on the ground and three as a receiver.

Betting and Odds For This Weekend’s NFC Championship Matchup.
This weekend’s NFC Championship matchup between the Packers and the Buccaneers should be one for the ages- the matchup that everyone wanted to see as soon as it was announced that Tom Brady was taking his talents to Tampa Bay.
The winner will advance to the Super Bowl (which coincidentally will be played in Tampa Bay) in a couple of weeks. Below are betting odds for the matchup as well as my picks.
Spread- Packers are 3.5 Point Favorites (-175)
NFL odds show the Packers as the favorite this weekend, with the line moving from 3 to 3.5 over the course of the week.
The first place I would look at this matchup will be the Tampa Bay offense specifically the play of Tom Brady and the play-calling of Bruce Arians since their bye late in the season. Early in the year Brady and the Bucs receivers struggled to get on the same page and it looked like an offense that was being constructed on the fly. Ever since the bye however offense has been gelling as well as any other unit in the NFL- and Tom Brady is on pace for his second-best season ever according to PFF.
This Tampa Bay offense was able to take advantage of the Packer’s defense early in the year, even before the offense started playing well. In fact, you can argue that it took the Packers game in order for the Buccaneers to turn their offense around and put together their first complete performance of the season. Given Tom Brady’s record in playing in cold weather and the depth chart of receivers the Buccaneers possess, I think that they will put the game in Tom Brady’s hand early and allow the receivers to put their defenders in bad positions.
Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones II form a fearsome tandem in the backfield and the Buccaneers offensive line is able to keep Tom upright not just because they have a solid unit but also because he stays within the pocket more than any other passer in the league. It will be interesting to see how the front four of the Packers defense is able to get home on Brady because if they are unable to without another Defender coming down and taking them out of the pass defense I think that the Buccaneers have the tools and the capability to absolutely pick apart this Packers defense. If Brady starts getting greedy and throwing downfield the Buccaneers will be in trouble but if they are able to take what’s the Packers are going to give them underneath which Tom Brady is one of the best in the history of the game in doing so, I think the Buccaneers offense will have no problem putting up points.
Suh will come for Rodgers in the NFC Championship.
Next up is a Tampa Bay defense which is one of the few teams in the NFL to actually stop the Packers for an entire game. As everyone is aware by now the Buccaneers were able to hold Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur in hand during their week 6 matchup, winning 38-10. The Packers opened up the first two possessions scoring points and got shutout for the rest of the game by Todd Bowles and the defense. What happened after those first two drives? The answer is Todd Bowles started blitzing for the rest of the game. Tampa Bay brought multiple defenders down either from secondary or linebacker positions and completely overwhelmed the Packers. You often see the Packers keep either a tight end and/or a running back in the backfield to help with pass protection especially when they call long developing route combinations. However, if the Bucs are able to create pressure by bringing 5 and 6 man pressure packages against the Packers that is going to force Aaron Rodgers to move quickly and get rid of the ball even quicker.
The bad news for the Buccaneers defense? Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur have learned from their past mistakes and ever since their week 6 matchup has been the best team in the NFL at beating the blitz with Rodgers. From recent comments made by Davante Adams and others on the team, it sounds like the Packers for the first time in their young season got punched in the mouth when they played Tampa Bay and frankly did not have a response ready. This is a different team from that one and the Packers offense will have plans and adjustments at the ready this weekend.
3 and 1/2 points seems a little rich for me as far as the line goes. I’m not sure if that half-point is Lambeau Field’s expected home field advantage or if there’s something else about this matchup that makes Vegas confident that this will be more than a field goal spread. While I do think the Packers are the favorite here and should be the favorites I do believe that this will be a close game and that this will be less than a three-point spread.
I take the Packers to win outright but will take Tampa Bay to cover as well.
Over/Under- 51 Total Points.
The weather report for this weekend is cold but not windy which should be favorable for points. As I mentioned earlier in this article, when there is snow on the ground that generally favors the offense. Receivers have better footing because they know where they’re going and defenders have a harder time tracking opposing receivers and getting into advantageous positions. Tom Brady knows this as he was able to master taking advantage of isolated man-on-man defenders in cold snowy weather and wreck them for Championship drives.
If the weather holds and the wind isn’t too heavy I think that both the Packers and the Buccaneers are going to put on a light show. Hammer the over.

Before we dive deep into the NFC Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I just have one question. It’s been bothering me for the last 18 hours or so.
How the hell did the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers combine to score six goals in the third period Thursday night?
We were cruising on our way to yet another Bruins Under (5.5) with only two goals after two periods. Then, an absolute hail storm of pucks found the back of both nets.
Bruins fans were definitely elated to see the offensive lid lifted in the final frame. And some people actually thought the sky was falling after a 1-1-1 start for the beloved B’s. This team still has the juice and I can’t wait to see them at full strength.
Anyway, let’s go to work.
Aaron Rodgers has been waiting for this game his entire career.
Rodgers and the Packers earned every bit of their home-field advantage by rolling through the regular season to a 13-3 record. Their sustained success helped guarantee a 27-degree date with Tom Brady and Co. this Sunday in the Land of Cheese.

Yes, Brady has been there and done that before. I get it. But last weekend’s eye test was eye-opening. The GOAT was far from impressive in a domed stadium with absolutely zero elements. Brady dinked and dunked his way to an 18-of-33 performance that left a lot to be desired.
And now he’s going to just throw the cape on at Lambeau Field?
I ain’t buying it!
Rodgers and his head coach, Matt LaFleur, have made magic on the offensive side of the ball. The surefire NFL MVP completed a career-high 70 percent of his passes this season and has tossed 50 touchdowns and five interceptions to date. Fifty and five!
That quarterback-coach duo has done nothing but win over the last two seasons (28-7), and LaFleur’s schematics and play-calling have helped guide Rodgers to the most successful statistical season of his career. No hyperbole.
There is not a throw on the field that Rodgers can’t make and I would much rather put my money on him at this point. If the Packers jump ahead early, the Bucs are doomed. According to Warren Sharp, Rodgers is 71-1-1 all-time when leading at halftime at Lambeau Field.
Tampa Bay’s journey is a great story, and maybe the league wouldn’t mind seeing Brady shoot for his seventh Super Bowl ring in his new home stadium. I’ll gladly pass on the Hollywood movie script, though. No thanks. Give me the better quarterback and better team laying a small number at home.
Rodgers is so close to the Super Bowl he can taste it.

This is a series that is tied 2-2 and the winner of this game will only be one win away from winning the championship.
The NC Dinos got a bye all the way to this series because they were the best team in the KBO all season. While the Doosan Bears had to win a couple of series to get here.
The Doosan Bears offense has been good all season but during the playoffs it’s actually been the pitching staff that has had to lead them to success. Two games ago even though the pitching staff let them down, the offense ran up the score. In the last game though, the Doosan Bears offense went back to their struggles and that led to the loss. Doosan could only manage three hits and zero runs and if they want any chance the offense needs to find a way to get the going.
The NC Dinos were the best team in the KBO all season and they have gotten the final series back on the right track sitting at 2-2.Even though the NC Dinos scored three runs in the last game, they believe they could have scored more after having nine hits. Aaron Athleer had a big game with two hits and scoring one run.
Chris Flexen will get the start for the Doosan Bears and coming into this game he sits with an 8-4 record and an ERA of 3.01.
Chang-mo Koo will get the start for the NC Dinos and coming into this game he sits with a 9-0 record and an ERA of 1.74.
This game will be played inside the Sky Dome so there will be no concern about weather.
Koo has been lights out this year and that will continue in this game. Look tor a low scoring game that the NC Dinos win on the run line.

As promised, Sen. Brendan Crighton filed the sports betting bill he hopes could finally bring about legal MA sports betting.
Crighton broke down the pertinent points for LSR earlier this month and there don’t appear to be any surprises in SD 177 .
“We’ve modified our bill over the past few years but we’re pretty confident in the product we have now,” Crighton said at the time.
Crighton’s legislation would require an up-front $10 million fee from any gaming operator that wants to offer Massachusetts sports betting. Sports betting revenue would be taxed at 15% . The bill bans betting on in-state college sports .
Massachusetts obviously would be better off acting sooner than later to get legislation passed. Sports betting dollars are already freely flowing over its border to New Hampshire and Rhode Island , both of which legalized more than 18 months ago.
Who can take part in MA sports betting?
Now that SD 177 is published, we know who will be in line for a sports betting license:
Massachusetts’ two full-service casinos – Encore Boston Harbor and MGM Springfield – and its Plainridge Park racino operated by Penn National . That means Barstool Sportsbook , BetMGM and WynnBET are guaranteed licenses. Horse racing tracks and off-track betting facilities. New racetracks would be required to invest at least $25 million within three years to qualify for a license. Mobile-only sports betting operators.
All licenses would be good for five years with a $1.25 million renewal fee. There’s no limit on licenses for now, though that could change as the bill progresses through the legislature.
Crighton mentioned his bill could bring in $70 million for the state before a bet is accepted.
House proposal calls for betting study.
Rep. Bradford Hill has a sports betting proposal of his own, though it could slow down the rollout of a legal industry considerably.
HD 118 and HD 119 establish a special commission that would comprehensively study online sports betting. The eight-person commission would include appointees from Gov. Charlie Baker, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and leaders in the House and Senate.
The bills are identical except for the breakdown of where tax revenue will go.
“I want as many bills in so we can get something passed,” Hill said.
The commission would have to meet within 30 days of the bill’s passage. A recommendation for sports betting legislation would be due within 120 days of the bill’s passage.
Hill’s proposal also taxes daily fantasy sports revenue at 15% with an application fee that’s the lesser of $100,000 or 1.5% of the operator’s gross revenue from the previous year. DFS is not illegal in Massachusetts but there’s currently no tax structure.

Cuomo’s office issued a release further detailing the Governor’s plans for mobile sports betting. There’s one big catch: Cuomo wants a Lottery-run sportsbook monopoly.
“Under Governor Cuomo’s proposal,” reads the statement, “the New York State Gaming Commission will issue a request for proposals to select and license a sports operator or platform to offer mobile sports wagering in New York. This operator or platform must have a partnership with one of the existing licensed commercial casinos.”
Simply put, this means Cuomo wants one sports betting operator. This model is best likened to Delaware, where sports betting and online casinos are all operated by 888 Holdings.
Revenue A Key Driver.
Cuomo’s reasoning for a single-operator Lottery-based sports betting model is revenue.
“At a time when New York faces a historic budget deficit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the current online sports wagering structure incentivizes a large segment of New York residents to travel out of state to make online sports wagers or continue to patronize black markets,” Governor Cuomo said. “New York has the potential to be the largest sports wagering market in the United States, and by legalizing online sports betting we aim to keep millions of dollars in revenue here at home, which will only strengthen our ability to rebuild from the COVID-19 crisis.”
But Cuomo doesn’t want all the potential revenue to go to casinos. He made this much clear in a press conference, according to WKBW Buffalo . “I’m not here to make casinos a lot of money, I’m here to raise funds for the state,” said Cuomo.

Should New York move forward with Cuomo’s desired model, sports bettors would have a single platform to bet on. At best, the selected operator might be able to launch multiple skins of the same sportsbook with the functionality remaining the same.

South Dakota Sports Betting Proposal Includes Mobile – With A Catch.
South Dakota residents approved sports betting in Deadwood by referendum last November .
What they also approved was language that created a mobile loophole.
Whether bets are technically placed on a device or on a server remains an unanswered legal question in federal law. SD bets legally have to be placed at a Deadwood casino, but that can be established by keeping the mobile betting servers at the casino.
SB 44 introduced by the Committee on Commerce and Energy suggests exactly that:
Any sports wagering may only be conducted in the interior of a licensed gaming establishment within the city of Deadwood. Each operator or route operator that is authorized by the commission to conduct sports wagering shall install and maintain equipment that is approved by the commission to ensure that all bets are placed from within the interior of a licensed gaming establishment within the city of Deadwood.
It’s also important to note that the distinction “within the city of Deadwood” does not apply to the state’s 11 tribal casinos . Under federal law, Indian casinos can offer any games authorized by that state’s legislature on tribal land.
Unfortunately, legal SD sports betting could struggle to capture dollars flowing to the illegal market or nearby Iowa should this bill pass as written.
Market-killing South Dakota sports betting bill detail.
While it’s a big plus to include mobile betting in the bill, there’s one flaw preventing a truly open market.
The legislation requires in-person registration in Deadwood, which sits on the western border of the state. That’s a problem for those throughout the massive state that want to legally take part in online sports betting.
Take a sports bettor in Sioux Falls – a 5.5-hour car trip from Deadwood – for instance. That bettor would likely continue to bet in Iowa, which is only a 20-minute ride.
Iowa just became easier too.
In-person registration recently expired in Iowa. That means anyone can bet with any sportsbook in the state with just a quick trip over the border.
Other important details:
It will only cost $2,000 annually for a sports betting license. No betting on South Dakota college events . No prop bets that focus on an individual college athlete’s performance.
In-person registration could change after passage.
While there’s no expiration date for in-person registration like in the Iowa or Illinois sports betting markets, South Dakota could change its mind down the road.

The under is my favorite bet right now between the sides and total for a few reasons. The Week 12 Final Score Is Misleading.
The final score could’ve been closer to 38-24 if the Chiefs hadn’t coughed up a red zone fumble and settled for two red zone field goals, if the Chiefs kept their foot on the gas in the second half instead of chewing clock, or if Mike Evans hadn’t scored two garbage-time touchdowns in the fourth quarter. This game was a textbook example of how the final score doesn’t tell the full story.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB : Patrick Mahomes‘ projection looks crazy — nobody ever projects for 350 yards — but the Chiefs are very likely to throw 35-50 times against the Bucs. (Projection here) Chiefs Wide Receivers : WR Tyreek Hill went so nuclear against the Bucs in Week 12 (12-263-3) that I spent the 30 minutes it took to clip all of his touches from that game (video). The Bucs switched up their coverages then, but Hill kept getting open. I don’t think the Bucs have a single corner capable of hanging with Hill when they go to Cover 3 or Cover 1 man. Tom Brady, Buccaneers QB: Tom Brady also projects well. The Bucs may run the ball early — Kansas City’s defense faced the 28th-highest neutral pass rate this season because the Chiefs are typically light in the box — but Tampa’s projected game script favors a pass-heavy game as three-point dogs. (Projection here) Buccaneers Wide Receivers : Before the NFC Championship, Antonio Brown was reportedly “day-to-day”. It’s unknown if he’ll play in the Super Bowl, but I left him for now. Even at full health, Brown is not an every-down player. He lines up wide only in three-receiver sets and could even be pushed by Scotty Miller, who scored a long touchdown last game. How to Bet NFL 2nd Half Lines.
Although most of the football strategies I discuss in this space involve betting on the full game line, there are a myriad of ways that bettors can find value and maximize their investments. One method that I don’t often mention is second half betting, which can be utilized to create middling opportunities for anybody looking to mitigate their risk.
For anybody who is unfamiliar with the concept of second half (2H) betting, it’s actually quite simple. Whenever a game goes into halftime, oddsmakers will quickly post lines for the second half of the game. This solely reflects the outcome of the second half; not the final score. These lines are only available for 15-20 minutes and this short time frame creates a unique opening for bettors.
Sportsbooks have limited time to set second half lines, and they’re typically being forced to set several lines simultaneously. This is the oddsmakers worst nightmare. With limited preparation time and an inability to pay close attention to every ongoing game, oddsmakers are more likely to make mistakes that can be exploited by sharp bettors.
My past research found that a majority of NFL bettors have taken the favorite in roughly 80% of all regular season games played in the past 13 seasons, and this has historically created value on underdogs for the full game spread. We have also found that betting against the public — particularly teams receiving less than 25% of spread bets — has been highly effective.
Unfortunately, there are significantly fewer bets placed on the second half line as opposed to the full game line, and that decreased volume adversely affects most of our contrarian strategies. As you can see from the table below, betting against the public has not been an effective strategy for second half bettors.
Since the start of the 2003 NFL season, second half underdogs have gone just 1,348-1,367 (49.7%) in regular season games. However, I found that home field advantage continues to be overvalued by casual bettors. Over that same time period, road teams have gone 1,400-1,294 ATS (52.0%) on the second half spread.
It’s worth noting that although second half underdogs have struggled, there has been value taking big second half ‘dogs. Contrarian betting means going against the grain and buying on bad news, which includes backing the perennial cellar dwellers and fading the league’s top teams.
Using Bet Labs software, I found that second half underdogs of at least 7-points have gone 131-90 ATS (59.3%) in regular season games. That win rate improves noticeably in conference games, where the familiarity between teams levels the playing field.
The win rate for teams fitting these criteria is slightly higher for road teams than home teams, but it has been profitable regardless of venue. I should also point out that most of these past matches were large underdogs on the full game spread who were winning at halftime. In fact, 63.3% of these past matches were double-digit underdogs on the full game spread while 68.3% outscored their opponent in the first half.
This was an important development because my analysis on NBA second half betting found that public bettors will almost always gravitate towards the team that’s trailing at halftime — especially if they were favored on the full game spread. When the favorite is losing at halftime, their second half spread will always be more attractive than the closing full game spread.
Casual bettors believe they’re getting an excellent number at halftime — one that wasn’t even available before the game. However, they don’t seem to concern themselves with the first half results. If the Patriots closed as 10-point favorites and they’re losing by 7-points at halftime, the second half line may open New England -7. For many bettors, it’s tantalizing to take an elite team as a pick ’em when the closing line was ten points worse. This is flawed logic since each half needs to be treated as a separate event.
I believed that based on this tendency and the ability of oddsmakers to shade their lines to account for public perception; there would be tremendous value taking second half teams that are leading at halftime.
After sorting through our historical archive, I found that there has been a direct correlation between large first half leads and higher winning percentages. The table below examines the performance of teams that are winning at halftime using several key numbers for football bettors.
For the sake of comparison, I chose to examine two different criteria:
First half margin: The team’s margin of victory in the first half First half spread margin: The team’s margin of victory as compared to the first half spread.

It’s interesting to note that for both the first half margin and first half spread margin, there’s a direct correlation between larger halftime leads and an increased return on investment (ROI). That goes against the popular belief that teams who struggle in the first half are likely to make the necessary halftime adjustments or score a meaningless, last minute touchdown to pull off the backdoor cover.
We already knew that favorites have offered a slight value on the second half line, but what happens when that favorite is also winning by at least 10-points?
Scott Cooley, an Odds Consultant for the market-setting Bookmaker.eu, helped provide some insight into public betting patterns. “In general, public bettors do side with the team that is trailing, and it becomes an overwhelming majority if the trailing team was favored to begin with,” said Cooley. “The square player is usually hesitant of backing the team up big because they’ve already missed a better number.”
Essentially, casual bettors are unwilling to take big favorites on the second half line because they feel like they already missed their opportunity and/or they are unwilling to double down on their original bet. They may also be more hesitant about taking second half favorites with a large lead because they are looking for a middling opportunity.
As an example, let’s say you have already bet on the Seattle Seahawks (-6.5) against the Los Angeles Rams. If the ‘Hawks are leading by 14-points at halftime, you’re in great position to win your bet — but there’s always the chance that Rams turn things around and cover the spread. However, you can easily mitigate that risk by betting the second half line.
Since bettors are likely to take the favorite on the full game line, it is increasingly likely that they will take the underdog on the second half line in order to create this middle opportunity. That said, oddsmakers won’t typically adjust their second half spreads to prevent middling opportunities.
“Middles will be available at halftime regularly so we won’t shade based on that opportunity,” according to Cooley. “Where we might shade is if we have a ton of liability on one side of a spread or total. Also, we may shade a bit if a sizeable favorite is losing.”
This was an intriguing statement because favorites that aren’t winning at halftime have gone just 563-590 ATS (48.8%) since 2003. When they’re favored by at least 6-points on the full game spread, the record drops to 177-221 ATS (44.5%). When they’re favored by at least 10-points, the record drops to 49-73 ATS (40.2%). By simply betting against these sizeable favorites, second half bettors would be able to capitalize on these lines that have been artificially inflated to account for public perception.
To summarize, these are three of the most effective strategies for NFL second half spread bettors:
Take large second half underdogs. Take teams that are winning big at halftime. Fade big pre-game favorites that are losing at halftime.
It’s true that there are substantially fewer bets placed on the total as opposed to the spread, but there’s still tremendous value for opportunistic second half bettors. Since 2003, second half overs have won at a 50.3% rate. When the opening second half total is 20 or less, that win rate improves to 53.1%. When the first half total didn’t go over, that win rate leaps to 55.5%.
Historically there has been more value betting overs when there’s a low total, and that trend persists on the second half line. We always stress the importance of buying on bad news to capitalize on the public’s tendency to overreact to recent events, and clearly bettors assume that a low-scoring first half is an indicator of a low-scoring second half. Contrarian bettors can capitalize on this sentiment by taking the over after a low-scoring half.
